New Palestinian Prime Minister: the gap between power and people

   Reading time - 3

“The real disconnect from reality and the Palestinian people – is Hamas’ leadership”

Recent developments surrounding the appointment of a new Prime Minister, Mohammad Mustafa, in the Palestinian Authority have provoked a strong reaction from various factions. They accuse President Mahmoud Abbas of increasing division and exclusion.

Reaction of Hamas and other factions

Hamas and other factions have accused Abbas of increasing division and exclusion. They signed a statement saying that such steps point to “a huge gap between the (Palestinian) authorities and the people, their concerns and their aspirations.”

“The real disconnect from reality and the Palestinian people – is Hamas‘ leadership”, Fatah said, accusing Hamas of not” consulting ” with other Palestinian leaders before launching its attack on Israel.

“Whoever caused the re-Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip and provoked disaster for the Palestinian people, especially for the Gaza Strip, has no right to impose national priorities”

Hamas and the October attack

During the October attack, terrorists stormed into southern Israel under the cover of thousands of rockets and killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians. In addition, the terrorists abducted 253 people and took them hostage in Gaza.

Israel’s response to the attack

The attack led to a declaration of war by Israel. The Hamas Health ministry in Gaza claims that nearly 31,000 Palestinians have been killed in the fighting, but the number cannot be independently verified as it is believed to include both Hamas terrorists and civilians.

Mustafa’s tasks as the new Prime Minister

69-year-old Mustafa now has to form a new government of the Palestinian Authority, which has limited powers in some parts of the West Bank.

The United States and other world powers are calling for the creation of a reformed Palestinian Authority that will take over all Palestinian territories after the end of the war, as the government of Benjamin Netanyahu rejected post-war plans to ensure Palestinian sovereignty and refused to hand over the Gaza Strip to the PA.

Arab and international efforts have so far failed to reconcile Hamas and Fatah, which makes the backbone of the PA, since the Hamas 2007 takeover of Gaza, a move that reduced Abbas’s authority to the West Bank.

The Palestinians want both territories as the basis for a future independent State.

Mohammad Mustafa (Arabic: محمد عبد الله محمد مصطفى “السفاريني”) is a Palestinian economist, Chairman of the Board of the Palestine Investment Fund (PIF), Senior Economic Advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas and an Independent member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
